Our History

Asher Custom Homes began as Kogan Builders, Inc. in 1999. Over two decades KBI grew to become the most award winning design-build firm in Southwest Colorado. Recognizing the growing potential of building premier homes in this area, Edward Asher purchased Kogan Builders, Inc. in 2019.  Edward has drawn upon his extensive engineering background and experience building and growing a company as he has taken on the transition from KBI to Asher Custom Homes. Edward is a hands-on leader who has brought new energy and a family atmosphere to the team and is expanding Asher Custom Homes into new business segments and geographies.

Edward values a client-focused company culture, driven by quality and inspired by creativity and passion. He also sees the potential in the quality of life presented by the incredible backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, and all the possibilities that it affords.

Community Involvement

Few things are more important to us as a firm than community involvement. Each year, as a company we contribute to our local community through cash donations, volunteering and participating in local projects and events. Our goal is to support the local charities, organizations and clubs that make Durango and its surrounding communities such a wonderful place to live.

We spent 3 years looking across the US and picked Durango as the place to build our dream home. Having never had a custom home, we wanted quality, expertise, and a builder with a proven track record in the community. Asher Custom Homes addressed all 3 points from the start. We had the pleasure of being present throughout the build and saw our home take shape from the concept we laid out to the Asher design team. Our project manager and superintendent were always there to guide the build along and answered every question and concern we had - no matter how trivial they were in hindsight. The tradespeople assembled by Asher - excavators, concrete, framers, electricians, etc. - gave us quality and timely work. Each evidenced a level of goodwill and respect towards Asher that has obviously been earned over the years. In a now busy and competitive market, this is a very important factor that reassured us. A friend recently asked us, after touring our beautiful home, if we had to do it over, would we go with the same builder. Without hesitation, we both enthusiastically said yes.

  • Diana Sherman

My husband and I used Kogan Builders to design and build our beautiful custom home and we highly recommend them. From start to finish, the Kogan team bent over backwards to not only meet our every need and request, but often they anticipated those needs and helped us to see them. We had an amazing experience working with Kogan’s in house architectural designer Chris who helped us formulate our vision and put it on paper with his incredible creativity. We loved working with Ryan on the pre-construction process. He knew everything about getting the permits, and other necessary steps to prepare for ground breaking. He was very honest about costs and helped us tremendously to stay within our budget as we went through and made changes along the way. Tracy was instrumental in creating the homey feel inside that was so important to us. From lights to cabinets to faucets, she was there to help us make every decision - and there are many! From the moment we broke ground, Jason and his team made us feel at ease with the construction project. Because we live out of town, their updates and guidance as we went along were so invaluable to us. They always communicated with us when decisions needed to be made so that we did not lose time. The workmanship of the house was something we really noticed. Kogan uses top quality materials throughout -- even when you cannot see those materials in the end product. Looking at the building projects of other builders made us realize that, in comparison, Kogan goes above and beyond on many aspects of their construction that, while not seen, do impact the quality and function of the home. This is something you may not think about, but we would recommend inspecting homes in various stages of construction if you are considering other builders because it helps you to see how Kogan stands out in terms of quality. A friend of ours who built with Kogan recommended we do this and we are glad we took his advice. In the end, we have a home that we love and we cannot thank the Kogan team enough for making our dream a reality!

  • Julia Simons

My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Kogan Builders to design and build our custom home. We did not know anything about Kogan when we first contacted them; we based our decision initially on their previous designs and great reviews. We also liked the fact that they were prepared to handle everything from beginning to end -- permitting, design aspects, architectural/engineering work, construction, and even furnishings. From our first phone call, however, we knew we were in good hands. Ryan took so much time to explain the entire design process in great detail. Ryan and Chris listened to us and came up with architectural plans that exceeded our expectations. We loved working with the design team to pick out all of our finishes. It was one of the areas we worried about the most when deciding whether to build a custom home, but it turned out to be one of our favorite aspects. The team often thought outside the box to come up with unique ideas based on very general thoughts that we had. Once we got to construction, Jason and his team were absolutely incredible. They kept us informed, answered all of our questions and got the job done on time and in budget. Towards the end of the process, we had the pleasure of meeting Edward, Kogan's new owner. The transition went off without a hitch as far as we were concerned. Edward was great to us, very engaged in the process, and as happy as we were to see our home completed. Overall, Kogan is a great combination of consummate professionals with a warm family atmosphere. We also felt very comfortable with every member of the team. We cannot recommend Kogan highly enough!

  • Jim Watters

My wife and I bought a home in the upper Animas Valley that needed a complete remodel down to the studs, 3 additions and a new detached garage. The project took 7 months to complete. Having gone through this process before with other builders and also having built a new house from bare dirt, I must say that the experience was exceptional! We were assigned Bruce as our project manager and truly appreciated his professionalism, creativity, organizational skills and thoughtfulness. We were completely satisfied with the timeliness and quality of workmanship. Further, a few years later when we had a small issue that required plumbing, cement and stone work, Kogan Builders lived up to their reputation and performed the repair work quickly and fairly. These days most builders would not even return your phone call if an issue arises after the warranty period. This was not the case with Kogan. We would not hesitate to recommend their services to friends and if we are ever in need of a quality builder again......they would be our first phone call. Thank you Kogan Builders!!!
