About This Case Study

Challenge: Postage Stamp Lot on a Cliff

This family had dreams of creating a mountain retreat where many could gather and visit. With hopes of a ski-in, ski-out location at Durango Mountain Resort and a home that captured the views of majestic Engineer Mountain, they had their eyes on a lot that met their conditions, but almost passed on the purchase because the cliff and small lot size presented too many challenges.

Luckily they contacted Asher Custom Homes and asked us to provide a site analysis. The Asher team envisioned utilizing steel beams that cantilevered over the cliff to extend the effective buildable area. Assured building on the site was not only possible, but would achieve their goals, our clients purchased the lot and the Asher design team began working their magic. The result was a stunning, four-story “mining style” home with one-third of the footprint cantilevered over the cliff.

Inspired by the vertical nature of the lot, we designed a home that reflects the tall, mining structures nestled into the San Juan Mountains and pays homage to the history of the region. Large timbers, custom-made iron strapping and rich wood accents all enhance the elegant mining style. Easy accessibility for the four levels and four bedrooms is provided by an elevator and ensures an “age in place” feature for years to come. The happy ending to this story- “Judges Selection Award” by the Parade of Homes.
